Decision Making :
The process of choosing a solution from available alternatives is called "Decision Making".
For effective decision making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option as well, and based on all these items, determine which option is the best for that particular situation. Decision making is the combination of planning ,organizing ,leading and controlling.
Rational Decision Making :
A systematic process of defining problems ,evaluating alternatives and choosing optimal solution.
Characteristics of Decision Making :
1. Choice making alternatives :
It is a process of choosing a course of action from among the alternative courses of action. It is a human process involving to a great extent the application of intellectual abilities. It is the end process preceded by deliberation and reasoning.
2. Alternatives based on Environment :
It is always related to the environment. A manager may take one decision in a particular set of circumstances and another in a different set of circumstances. It involves a time dimension and a time lag (it can be like postponement of decision).
3 .Assumption :
It always has a purpose. Keeping this in view, there may just be a decision not to decide.
Decision Making Model :
1. Identify the decision.
2. Gather information.
3. Identify the alternatives.
4. Weigh the evidence.
5. Choose from alternatives.
6. Take actions.
7. Review the decision.
Difference between Problem Solving and Decision Making ?
Decision making and problem solving are similar in that they both seek the positive resolution of an issue. In life we are usually confronted with a problem and often it is unclear how to solve the problem. Decision making is a tool that can be used to solve a problem.
In general, problem solving takes a larger view and usually involves implementing a strategy. That strategy usually includes making one or more decisions. There is an overlap. However, it is generally deemed that decision making is a subset of problem solving.
The major difference between the two is; problem solving is a method while decision making is a process. Problem solving, as the name implies, is solving a problem. Meaning, it is a method wherein a group or an individual makes something positive out of a problem.
Difference between Issue and Problem ?
The important distinguishing factor between problem and issue, is that problem refers to a complicated situation that can be fixed or solved. You may have come across this common expression before: there is a solution to every problem.
